zakah is the third of the essential pillars of Islam. So when you give zakah, give it from your heart, showing thankfulness to the Almighty Allah. For charity doesn’t diminish wealth, in fact it purifies it.

Zakat is payable only by those who have excess after fulfilling their basic needs (food, clothes, housing, medicine, etc). Therefore if paying zakat would cause genuine hardship to a person or his family, then they are not obliged to pay it

Some ‘Ulama’ are of the opinion that after the payment of the annual Zakat (poor-due), it is not necessary to spend more. But to be accurate, if somebody pays Zakat and yet retains enough money with him, and there are some needy people also in his knowledge, then he will be bound to spend on them. At-Tirmidhi quoted a Hadith in which
Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,
“Indeed there is a right (for poor) in the wealth in addition to Zakat.”

Allah says in Quran, “Eat of [each of] its fruit when it yields and give it due [zakat] on the day of its harvest.” – [quran, 6:141]

Allah says in Quran: “Verily, those who give Sadaqah (i.e.Zakat and alms), men and women, and lend to Allah a goodly loan, it shall be increased manifold (to their credit), and theirs shall be an honourable reward (i.e. Paradise).” –  [Quran, 57:18] // May Almighty accept our good deeds, forgive our sins and count us among the people of Paradise.

“Learn Islam and Spread the Islamic knowledge so it will be Sadqa-e-Jaaria (everlasting charity) … In’Shaa’Allah.”

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon him) said “Charity(Zakat) does not decrease the wealth”

Abu Umamah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,
“O son of Adam, if you spend the surplus, it will be better for you; and if you retain it, it will be evil for you. You will not be reprimanded for storing what is enough for your need. First of all spend upon those who are your dependents.”
[At-Tirmidhi] .

“And attend to your prayers, and practice regular charity, and kneel with those who kneel.” [quran 2:43]

“And establish prayer and give zakah, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves – you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah of what you do, is Seeing.” – al-Quran 2:110

“MY Mercy embraces all the things.” – [Quran, 7:156]
“And they who are observant of zakah.” – 23:4

“The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and givezakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those – Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.” -Quran (9:71)

“Obedience to Allah is the doorway to attain his mercy. The Almighty says: “But My mercy encompasses all things. So I will decree it [especially] for those who fear Me and give Zakat and those who believe in Our verses.” (Al-Aaraf: 156)
“Allah has prescribed for his servants obligatory charity. He says: “And establish prayer and give Zakat.” (Al-Baqara: 43)

“…and establish prayer and give zakah and do not fear except Allah” – [ Quran, 9:18]

“Indeed, those who believe and do righteous
deeds and establish prayer and give zakah
will have their reward with their Lord, and
there will be no fear concerning them, nor will
they grieve.” (2:277)

“Your ally is none but Allah and [therefore] His Messenger and those who have believed – those who establish prayer and give zakah, and they bow [in worship] [Qur’an 5:55]

“Zakah does not become obligatory except after the completion of one whole year.”

Narrated by Abu Huraira Prophet(Peace Be upon him) said said,
“Whoever is made wealthy by Allah and does not pay the Zakat of his wealth, then on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will be made like a bald-headed poisonous male snake with two black spots over the eyes.
The snake will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks and say, ‘I am your wealth, I am your treasure.’

” Then Rasulullaah Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam recited the holy verses:– “And let not those who covetously withhold of that which Allah has bestowed upon them of his bounty.” (to the end of the verse). (3.180).

Narrated by Abdullah son of umar (ra) that the messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: (the superstructure of) al-Islam is raised by five pillars: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Mohammed is the last messenger, the establishment of payers, payment of zakat, pilgrimage to the house (ka’ba) and the fast of Ramadan

People eligible to receive Zakat were defined by Allah in his holy book.
He said: “Zakat expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [Zakat] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveller – an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.” (At-Tawba: 60

Narrated by Abdullah son of umar (ra) that the messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: (the superstructure of) al-Islam is raised by five pillars: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Mohammed is the last messenger, the establishment of payers, payment of zakat, pilgrimage to the house (ka’ba) and the fast of Ramadan

“Worship Allah and associate no partner with Him, perform As-Salat, payZakat, and maintain the ties of kinship.” (Bukhari)
Narrated Ibn ‘Umar: Allah’s Apostle said: Islam is based on (the following) five (principles): (1) To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Messenger of Allah. (2) To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers.
(3) To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity).
(4) To perform Hajj (i.e. Pilgrimage to Makkah)
(5) To observe fast during the month of Ramadan.

Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar said that the Holy Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) ordered the people to pay Zakat al Fitr before going to the Eid prayer. (al-Bukhari)

“Success for a Muslim is measured by the depth of their relationship with Allah and their obedience in serving him.” –

Shaikh Abdul-‘Azīz Ibn Bāz (rahimahullāh) said: “There is no harm in a man or woman giving their Zakāh to a blood brother or sister who are poor, or to their uncle or aunt – or to any of their poor relatives due to the generality of evidences.”

Indeed giving Zakah to them is an act of charity and joining the ties of kinship due to the saying of the Prophet (ﷺ):
“Charity to the poor is one act of charity whereas charity to a relative is an act of charity and joining a tie of kinship.”
[AHMAD, 15794 (Hadīth of Salman ibn Aamir; An-Nasa’i 2582]

This giving of Zakah however does not apply to one’s parents and grandparents and their ascending line, nor to one’s children and grandchildren and their descending line. One cannot give their Zakah to this category of relatives even if they are poor. Rather it is obligatory for a person to provide for them from his wealth if he is able to do so, and there is no one else to spend upon them other than him.”
